BACKGROUND:  
The NYC Seaport District will be world renowned for events, entertainment and retail.  After completion, Seaport District will encompass seven buildings on several city blocks totaling more than 400,000 square feet filled with cutting-edge dining, shopping, entertainment and cultural offerings that will be one of the city’s ultimate destinations. Restaurants will include culinary powerhouses like Jean-Georges Vongerichten and Momofuku Group led by David Chang, and an additional 40,000 square foot food market in the restored Tin Building rivaling the most popular food concepts. South Street Seaport will also include 10 Corso Como, the first North American location of the globally popular concept store. 
 
For entertainment, visitors can experience leading cinema operator iPic Theaters’ first Manhattan location and the new Pier 17 building that will be highlighted by a 1.5-acre rooftop which boasts unparalleled views of the Brooklyn Bridge and the NYC skyline. The rooftop will be programmed year-round, include outdoor restaurants and bars, and a venue for seasonal concerts and special events—along with an annual transformation into a winter village, complete with ice-skating rink. The Seaport District will soon be a cultural and entertainment gathering place for New Yorkers and visitors alike.
 
POSITION SUMMARY:  
The Howard Hughes Corporation is searching for a Director of Accounting to oversee accounting for its retail, hospitality and food and beverage operations. The position is located at the Seaport District and will service the accounting needs of two major tenants.
 
The Director of Accounting will plan, direct, and manage the accurate and timely financial data from which informed management decisions can be made.  Safeguard owner assets by creating and maintaining sound internal control systems.  Hire the most professional, service-oriented, dedicated highly skilled, trained staff available.  Participate as a member of the system implementation task force.
 
ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:  
  • Direct preparation of annual budgets and monthly forecasts; establish or recommend to management trends and variance analysis.
  • Manage the daily operations of the corporate G/L accounting team including all phases of the full-cycle accounting process, financial analysis, team communications, training, mentoring and counseling.
  • Recommend and set up the selection and development of appropriate accounting systems and processes for the retail and hospitality businesses
  • Support the General Manager(s) by direct preparation of monthly and annual reports, summarize and forecast revenues, expenses, and earning based on past, present and expected operations.
  • Ensure compliance with corporate policies and procedures and all applicable laws.
  • Ensure the collection and payment of applicable local, state, federal taxes, accounts receivable and payable.
  • Ensure proper application of accounting standards to inventory, deferred income, revenue recognition, accruals and other GAAP financial standards
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Work in a cooperative and friendly manner with fellow employees, set a positive example.
  • Read, understand and follow all policies, procedures and practices as stated in the Employee Handbook.
  • Provide analysis and support to the SEC Reporting and Technical Accounting team.
  • Assist with special projects and other duties as needed.
  • Be flexible in a demanding environment to deliver best in class customer service to Executive Management
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
  • Industry experience across both retail and hospitality / food and beverage.
  • Minimum of 8 years related experience that is a combination of corporate accounting with public accounting or equivalent work experience.
  • Ability to meet deadlines as necessary and work additional hours as required.
  • Proficient in MS office applications: Word, Excel, Power Point.
  • Knowledge of general ledger applications.
  • Hyperion Financial Management consolidation and reporting tools.
  • Knowledge of state and city taxation requirements
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting required.
  • CPA required
