The Vice President of Accounting Policy and Reporting will act as the company's lead technical accounting representative in terms of establishing and maintaining adherence to GAAP accounting policies across the organization; evaluating the consequences of complex or unusual transactions under consideration by management; and adopting revised or new accounting rules issued by the various rule-making bodies, including the FASB, the SEC and others.  This position will also be responsible for all aspects of the Company’s external reporting function, including the timely preparation of periodic reports to be filed with the SEC and delivery of certain statutory reports required by third parties.  This position will report directly to the Chief Accounting Officer and will have 4 direct reports that will support them in carrying out their responsibilities.
The ideal candidate will also prioritize the professional development of his or her direct reports, to enable their own transition into expanding and higher level roles within both the department and the company as a whole. Ultimately, this person should expect to function in a key leadership role within the Accounting Department.
  • Responsible for establishing accounting policy and ensuring consistent application of GAAP across the business. Also responsible for evaluating the accounting treatment for complex transactions under consideration by management and concluding on the proper accounting treatment for completed transactions.
  • Responsible for the oversight of the preparation and timely filing of all financial reports filed with the SEC including Forms 10-Q and 10-K, as well as quarterly earnings releases and supplemental reports.
  • Responsible for the review and accuracy of both internal management reports and externally reported financial statements and disclosures.
  • Continue to strengthen the quality and efficiency of the systems tied to the preparation of financial statements and SEC reports.
  • Research and monitor new accounting pronouncements and work with accounting department to provide practical implementation guidance when applicable and ensure proper disclosure.
  • Have an analytical approach to reviewing the financial, accounting and operational impacts of proposed transactions as required.
  • Monitor SEC reporting and disclosure initiatives to ensure practical application of new developments with a focus on simplifying and improving external reporting to investors.
  • Ensure that operational and design effectiveness of internal controls over financial reporting are maintained to ensure compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley.
  • Responsible for stand-alone reporting requirements.
  • Development of and talent planning for staff at all levels within the SEC Reporting Department.
  • Strong executive presence and ability to effectively communicate with upper management and the Audit Committee, including periodic presentations.
  • Excellent project management and team leadership skills and the ability to develop and mentor the team.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and establish processes that ensure that the responsibilities of the team are carried out efficiently and effectively.
  • Special projects and other duties as needed.
  • Minimum 15 years of relevant experience; 5 or more years of work experience in public accounting is preferable with a minimum of 5 years in a formal leadership role.
  • Advanced understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and the ability to research and apply GAAP to complex transactions.
  • Must have prior SEC reporting responsibilities and clear proficiency in SEC reporting requirements.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact effectively as part of a team.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including strong technical writing skills.

  • Real estate industry experience.
  • Highly proficient in MS office applications: Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting required.
  • CPA required.
